Selection of potato cultivars (Solanum tuberosum L.) resistant to drought and frost in Bolivia

Abstract
Potato cultivars were evaluated in the field and greenhouse in order to select the best cultivars for their resistance to water stress due to drought and frost. The response variables evaluated were: severity, recovery capacity, root volume, root biomass, foliage biomass, chlorophyll content, biomass gain, water use efficiency, tuber volume, Number of Tubers, and tuber weight. On the basis of the evaluated variables, five cultivars were selected: Aurora, Victoria, Jaspe, Salomé and Chota Ñawi, with greater resistance to water stress due to drought and nine cultivars: Jaspe, Aurora, Victoria, Salomé, Yungueñita, India, Puyjuni Imilla, Blanca and Chota Ñawi, with greater recovery from water stress due to drought. There was a high significant negative correlation of the severity variable versus foliage biomass and chlorophyll content. The cultivars 00-216-3 Victoria, P’alta Chola, and Isabel were identified as the most resistant to frost.
