Abstract
In Ecuador in the province of Bolívar, the most widespread potato varieties are INIAP-Gabriela and Superchola. These varieties are very susceptible to late blight (Phytophthora infestans), with a growing cycle of more than 160 days and a yield of less than 20 ton ha-1.
In response to these limitations, with the support of the Bolívar State University, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and local farmers a new variety with superior characteristics has been developed, INIAP-Fátima variety, which has moderate resistance to late blight, a crop life cycle of less than 150 days, yield superior to 30 ton ha-1, with quality for fresh consumption and processing.
